Walks and Steps You Can Trust in the Dark
Sidewalks and steps are where worn concrete turns into a trip hazard. A walk panel that rises an inch above the next one catches toes. A front stoop that settles pulls away from the house and lets water run toward the foundation. Steps that flake lose their sharp edges and get slippery in sleet. With roughly two in five Lenexa homes built in the 1970s and 1980s, according to Point2Homes’ Census summary, many front walks and stoops here are original and have had decades of clay movement under them.
Your walk or the city’s?
Most Lenexa lots have two kinds of walk. The public sidewalk along the street is in the right-of-way, which the city says typically extends 11 feet behind the back of the curb in residential areas. Any work there needs a right-of-way permit, and the city’s residential inspection guidelines require Engineering Services to inspect sidewalk forms before concrete is placed.
The city also repairs public walks. Its Sidewalk & Trail Repair Program fixes deteriorated sidewalks and fills gaps, with projects chosen each year and $650,000 set for 2026. Before paying to replace a broken public walk, it is worth reporting it to the city.
Everything on your side of the right-of-way is yours: the walk from the driveway to the door, paths to the backyard, and your stoop and steps. That is most of what we build.
What to look for on a walk-around
- Joints where a toe or a stroller wheel catches
- A walk that slopes toward the basement wall
- A gap opening between the stoop and the house
- Step noses worn round or broken off
- One step noticeably taller or shorter than the others
- Grit and flakes coming off the surface after winter
Rebuilding a walk
We remove the old panels, dig out soft soil and compact a rock base. HomeGuide’s sidewalk guide says most walkways are 4 to 6 inches thick, with heavier traffic needing more. The walk gets a slight side slope so rain runs into the lawn. We pour air-entrained concrete, broom it and tool joints at even spacing. If tree roots lifted the old walk, we talk through options first, because a new walk over the same roots will lift again.
Stoops and poured steps
Poured steps are formed on site to match your door threshold and landing. Every riser should be the same height and every tread the same depth, or people stumble. The top landing needs room to stand while a storm door swings open. Lenexa’s building guidelines set a 36-inch minimum footing depth below finished grade for structures, and a heavy stoop on loose fill will tip and settle as the clay moves. We check what is under the old steps before designing the new ones. Precast steps are an option for some homes, and we can price both.
Planning for a railing
A rail makes icy steps much safer. If you might want one now or later, say so before the pour: anchor sleeves cast into the steps give the posts a solid footing, which is far stronger than drilling into a finished edge years from now.
Getting through the first winters
Clear snow early, before foot traffic packs it into ice. For the first winter, use sand for grip instead of salt, and later avoid deicers made with ammonium compounds. A coat of sealer every few years and early attention to fine cracks keep freeze-thaw from opening them up.

Sidewalks & Steps Questions
Who fixes the public sidewalk in front of my Lenexa home?
Lenexa runs a Sidewalk & Trail Repair Program that repairs deteriorated public sidewalks, with projects picked each year. Report the problem to the city first. Walks and steps on your own lot are the owner’s to maintain.
Should I repair or replace my front steps?
HomeGuide puts step repair at $300 to $800 for cracks or small sections. Steps that have sunk, pulled away from the house or have uneven risers are usually better replaced.
Can a sunken walk be raised instead of replaced?
Often, if the panels are mostly intact. HomeGuide lists mudjacking a 100-square-foot sidewalk at $400 to $900. Our leveling page has more detail.
How thick is a typical sidewalk?
HomeGuide says most walkways are 4 to 6 inches thick. Any section that crosses a driveway needs to be as thick as the driveway.
